It happened here, 2018

Development of a web-app together with Narrative, CNRS and l’EHESS. Graphic design by Irvin anneix. The website is currently in beta and might be slow sometimes, please bear with us.

“It happened here” is a web audio-series in the city, playing immersive stories thanks to binaural audio. The website allows the user to browse through seasons and episodes, indicating the starting location of each one and indentified with color schemes.

An overview of the episodes locations is available. The map is developed with open-source and self-hosted tools. Tiles have been generated with Maputnik and are rendered by Leaflet.

Before launching an episode, a screen prompts the user to pick one of the three modes, in order to adjust the player to different scenarios.

One of those offers an in-situ listening. The websites asks explicitely for a geolocation validation, and waits for the listener to arrive within a small radius of the starting location to start an ambient sound, then begin the episode once closer.

Another mode, at home, enhances the experience with archive images, displayed on click on one of the pins placed on a street view or synchronized with the audio.
The third mode, Podcast, offers to listen to the audio without any of the above options.

Adding images within the database is quick and easy. Archives are displayed within a searchable and sortable table.

A custom tool allows to pick any of the added archives and specify when to sync them with the given audio.

Another one allows to place pins on the street image and connect them to one or several archive(s).

The website has a dedicated and optimized mobile version, with all the above functionnalities.

Archives are shown in fullscreen, and vertically scrollable.
